Keeping in mind the wise words of Mapúa University’s founder, Don Tomas Mapua:

Mapúa University has determinedly pursued quality improvement, implementing the Continuous Quality Improvement Office (CQIO) and different approaches, and following accreditations for its academic programs to provide for its students.

Continuous Quality Improvement

To complement the outcomes-based approach to education, the university created the Continuous Quality Improvement Office (CQIO) in 2004. As its name suggests, the office has the mandate to move the schools consistently toward higher levels of attainment of the program educational objectives and desired student learning outcomes of the academic programs.

In doing so, it ensures that the university implements the P-D-C-A (Plan-Do-Check-Act) approach to continuous quality improvement including the maintenance of its quality and environmental management systems (QMS, EMS). The office conducts internal quality audits to check compliance with mandatory, statutory and regulatory requirements, and supervises and coordinates all activities relevant to the accreditation of academic programs by both local and international accrediting bodies.

ABET and ABET Accreditation

Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization with ISO 9001:2015 certification. With ABET accreditation, students, employers, and the society we serve can be confident that a program meets the quality standards that produce graduates prepared to enter a global workforce. Mapúa responds to the challenge of globalization for the Philippine education sector with 10 ABET accredited programs.

Following the accreditation of its B.S. Computer Engineering, B.S. Electrical Engineering, and B.S. Electronics Engineering programs in 2010, ABET recently granted accreditation to Mapúa’s five other engineering and two computing programs: B.S. Chemical Engineering, B.S. Civil Engineering, B.S. Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, B.S. Industrial Engineering, B.S. Mechanical Engineering, B.S. Computer Science, and B.S. Information Technology.

Here is a quote from Mapúa’s president and chief executive officer, Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea to the school’s achievement:

It shows that we can hang on to a grand vision and at the same time slog through the quotidian. I think that the Mapúa community can be justifiably proud of this singular achievement because it has come after years of unflagging hard work and superb teamwork. While it serves Mapúa well, it also improves the standing of Philippine engineering education before the international community of engineers and computing professionals.

PACUCOA and PACUCOA Accreditation

The Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) is a private accrediting agency that gives formal recognition to an educational institution by attesting that its academic program maintains excellent standards in its educational operations, based on the context of its aims and objectives. The following are PACUCOA's objectives:

• To identify schools whose competence and performance in a particular field warrant public and professional recognition.
• To guide students in the choice of quality schools, colleges and universities that will meet their individual needs.
• To help institutions of learning achieve maximum educational effectiveness through self-evaluation and self-discipline.
• To enlist the cooperation of institutions of learning and professional associations in the mission of advancing the interest of education.

CQIO oversees preparations for the PACUCOA accreditation of the Institute’s academic programs. Relative to this, it checks the readiness of an academic program for an accreditation visit by ensuring that all accreditation requirements are fully met. To date, there are 15 academic programs of the Institute that are accredited by PACUCOA.

CHED Center of Excellence (COE) and Center of Development (COD)

CQIO spearheads preparations and the compilation of exhibits for use in the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Center of Development/Center of Excellence evaluations. To date, CHED has recognized eight of Mapúa’s programs as Centers of Excellence, while one program is cited as Centers of Development.
